About Us
About Us
Established in a traditional carpenter’s workshop in the heart of old Penzance, this premises has a long history of supplying essential items to the local economy, from coffins to fish baskets, bookshelves to boat spars.
Under the stewardship of David Need and Lawrence Nunes, this workshop produces a fine quality range of carpentry, joinery and furniture informed by over 30 years experience.
Catering for diverse requirements, from single bespoke items to home renovations and project management, The Carpentry Workshop is a hub of energy and enthusiasm where you are guaranteed to find the skill, creativity and integrity required to find the solution to realise your dream.

Where Traditional Skills Meet Modern Demands
David has a background in Design and photography working for 3 years in London followed by film set construction. Then particularly enjoying a gift for carpentry, there came a successful career as a boatbuilder, specialising in renovating traditionally built Cornish working boats such as Luggers and Gaffers. His involvement in keeping alive the story of these historic vessels continues as he is currently a trustee of the Cornish Maritime Trust, a local traditional sailing charity.

It could be said:
“There is a code to his work, born from the shipwright’s necessity to ‘do the job proper’
Joints & Bolts = Belt & Braces.”

As a maker, Lawrence has worked in many types of media, from video journalism to sculpture, written word to graphics, his urge to create has found various forms.
Moving to Cornwall in 2005, woodworking became the primary focus as he found his creative expression in carpentry and joinery.
Having grown up around the fine furniture made by his Great-grandfather, he has inherited an appreciation for skilled craftsmanship and a love of ergonomics.
Knowledge Of Material
Using the right materials is important. There are a vast range of timbers and composites available. Let us help you decide between softwood or hardwood, economy, durability, quality and cost, finish and suitability. (stock image of wood selection)
When the brief allows, we take great pleasure in working with timber that has been responsibly sourced within the UK. Knowing that the material has been grown and harvested in this land, enhances the project with the added dimension of sustainability.
